Flowers bring scent, texture and a classic look up close, on tables, in the bouquet and around the couple. Balloons work best for large statement pieces, such as a
ceremony arch, a
wall behind the head table or a
ceiling over the dance floor, where flowers at the same scale would cost much more. Many couples combine them: balloons for size, flowers for detail. Done well, modern balloon decor looks closer to a floral installation than to a party decoration.
What Balloons Do BetterScale for the budget. A large arch, a photo wall or a ceiling installation in balloons costs a fraction of the same piece in fresh flowers. This is how our own company started:
in 1990 WOW! Balloons was a flower shop, and balloons became a way to build big decor that clients could afford.
Exact colors. Professional balloons come in a very wide range of colors and finishes: matte, pearl, chrome and metallic. When a shade has to be matched precisely, we use double stuffing, one balloon placed inside another.
Big shapes. Balloons can fill a ceiling, wrap a staircase or form a freestanding sculpture, which is hard to do with flowers.
Lasting through setup. Indoors, in an air conditioned room, a balloon installation holds its shape for about a week, so it can be installed the day before the
wedding.
What Flowers Do BetterClose-up detail. On guest tables, in the bouquet and in boutonnieres, guests see the decor from a few inches away, and fresh flowers have a texture and scent that balloons do not.
Classic look. For a very traditional or formal wedding, many couples want flowers in the places where guests look closest.
Outdoors in summer. Balloons should not stand in direct sunlight, because heat makes them pop. For a sunny outdoor ceremony with no shade, flowers are the safer choice for the pieces that stand in the sun.
Combining Balloons and FlowersThe most common approach is to split the room: balloons for the large pieces, flowers for the details. Fresh or artificial flowers can also be worked directly into a balloon arch or
garland, so the two read as one design. When the florist has already set the palette, we match the balloons to it.
How Much Does Each Cost?Floral pricing depends on the flowers, the season and the florist. For balloons at WOW! Balloons, a standard 10 by 10 foot arch starts from $500 and an organic arch of the same size from about $800. Our
minimum order is from $500 and up in the Boston area and from $1,000 and up in New York City, plus a $100 setup and delivery fee.
